I’m only Seasonal, why me?
I started working inbound, 4 am shifts a little over a month ago. At first, I was doing what I thought I would be. I put my hours requested for 20-24 hours a week, and started doing multiple 4 hour shifts every other day. It was great- get there early, leave the store at 8 when the store opened. Then, December hits. Immediately my hours are going up to an insane degree, working multiple 8 hour days as opposed to my 4 hour days. I am so fatigued by the end of my shift its insane. The other day, I had two team leads come and complain to me that I wasn’t moving fast enough for inbound- that I needed to be unloading Uboats in 20-40 minutes, tops. In my mind, I’m thinking, what the fuck? It usually takes an hour or longer for a large/filled Uboat unless its larger items. After the first team lead I thought it was fine, but when I had a second guy come, who started hassling me saying I needed to have a sense of “Urgency” and even TIMED ME on how long a flatbed would take to unload. They’re saying it should average 1 minute per box, so he gave me 25 minutes. I’m having to rush to even get this stuff in its place, not to mention the store was open at the time- having to not get in the way of customers. It was awful. He kept talking on the radio as well to check in on me, constantly keeping me moving. I can’t be walking around that fast all day or my legs are gonna give out.
I don’t slack around when I work- I’m not listening to music, I keep a consistent pace so I don’t completely wear myself out- this was getting excessive. So as I was taking other Uboats and flatbeds out, I started asking other people doing my same job- how long does it take to unload a Uboat? After asking 5 different people, they all said about an hour depending on where you are having to unload, or if its very full. I also learned, no one else was getting ridden on for moving faster. There are TWO OTHER EMPLOYEES, (Also Seasonal, and in my same position!) who are way older than me (Think late 50’s/early 60’s), and yet arent getting told to “speed up” like this. The excuse had to do with “We only have so many hours we can designate to inbound, so we have to speed up or it transfers to the next day.” Which is bullshit, because people are stocking stuff all day, and we haven’t had issues even up to Black Friday. What gives?
Worst part, I can’t even change my availability over christmas despite the fact I won’t even be in town. I keep getting talked to like I don’t know what I’m doing, because the team leads obviously don’t even realize I’m on their teams or something. Wanting constant check-ins about what I’m doing, where I am. The last team lead who trained me was super casual about it- here, take this Uboat and get it done, whenever you’re done, just come back. We were chill. These other guys are just riding my ass for no good reason- we aren’t even getting double trucks or anything. I’m gonna tell HR that I’m not here for christmas, and if they schedule me- tough fucking luck.
