Target Sucks - We Hate Target and We Know We're Not Alone.

Will leave as soon as I can

I’m a cashier.  I get asked to stay late all the time due to call outs, and once every two weeks on my days off. I’m tired of the pressure from LODs to work outside of my schedule.  My LOD asked me to stay an extra hour the other day after a 8 hour shift, I said okay and it turned into 2 hours,  right before I leave she’s like “there might be a shift from 9:30-7pm tomorrow for a callout you wanna come?”  I wasn’t able to come but I get the feeling no one will care if I stay late it’s just the times I say no that are remembered. They have no regard if I am working an early shift the next day. If I close I feel pressured by one of the LODS who works nights to help the sales floor zone out of courtesy because they come up front if we’re busy if I work a closing shift.  I’ve had a long day and want to go home, the sales floor helps out during work hours, so let me go zone during work hours and take me off the register for a short time like they do.

The workers in my store have been mind conditioned by Target and are all willing to be their compliant slaves, they didn’t even care when the store was opened for Thanksgiving for Black *FRIDAY*, all drones here who love Target and I do not fit in.  I’m tired of the :do you have cartwheel, target coupons, giftcards, redcard” ramble I have to say to people in line when the LODs are watching.  Just have low prices no app or coupon required so I don’t have to go on and on about how you can save so much money shopping here *if* you do this and that, also if you aren’t happy with a price or you say it’s advertised wrong which it usually is I can just change it for you and you can save money that way because we are all about the “guest” and get sued for having all the prices wrong.  I just wanted to ring people up, bag, send them on their way, and this is NOT the company for that.

When I went to orientation there was this big thing about work life balance, yeah right!  Wanting me to work ten hour shifts, never know if the time I leave is really the time I’m supposed to leave and have 6 hours to sleep for the next day is not work life balance.   I thought this would be a nice company to work for and I like shopping here before I worked here and I’ve been disappointed by what a demanding, gimmicky, and guest kiss ass company they are.  I’m planning on moving in a few months and I will get another job at that point so I’m sticking it out even though I know I don’t belong here and I’m tired of dodging the LODs.  I just don’t want a hit and run job on my application so I’m dealing with this until then and cannot wait to tell them when I’m leaving.

Of the many times they've tried asking me to stay later or calling me to see if I can come in on my days off during the 10 months I was there, I've gone in may be twice and stayed later only like 3-4x if that. They clearly don't respect my time the way I do or of course anyone else's. At the very least they don't force you to stay or come in on your days off like some other places do.

Do your best to stay sane while you're still there. However, try to avoid pushing yourself past your limits, as Tarshit clearly tends to do with its employees. Run away from there the moment opportunity rings.

Yes, thank goodness for corp policy that they can't force you outside your scheduled shift. The pressure is more for me with staying late due to the fact that all the other workers have no issue with it so I feel like I'm the only one whom it bothers and I look like a lazy a$$ but at the end of my shift I'm tired and disoriented (I guess from turning my head and moving my eyes left and right so much to ring up lines of people), plus I have family waiting to see me. It's scary enough that Target is the way it is but to work in a store with Target robots is even worse. At my store they have a high priority to have enough cashiers, so if someone calls out it's not that there won't be a cashier available but there won't be enough for them. The day I had to stay an extra two hours and close IMO we had enough cashiers already.

I thought the same thing when I applied to be a cashier... I had no idea I'd be so pressured to sell red cards, talk about cartwheel, gift card promotions, surveys, etc... omg. I just want to be a regular cashier... I bet at any other huge retail store like Walmart or those huge grocery stores they don't force their employees to do this. Dunno why I picked Target. 🙁 Anyways, hang in there. I never answer my phone when they call on my days off lol.

When I cashiered for target I barely talked about coupons, cartwheel, red cards, etc. and I bagged according to what makes sense. No one wants to be bombarded with this shit when they go shopping. They want to shop, pay, and leave. You can't have a real conversation with people by annoying them about how to save when they clearly don't care.

If they want a red card, damnit they'll fucking ask for one! Every other cashiering position in the world doesn't involve annoying shoppers about ways to save 5 cents every time they buy a pack of gum. I don't know who's dumb idea it was to make cashiers hassle people about such things every time they come in to shop.

I'm glad I got out before losing my mind!

Exactly. I only do it when the LODs are around. I have one that will watch me for a bit just standing next to me canoodling with the customer I'm helping, can't stand that. Target I suppose wants the shoppers to know you can save all this money by shopping there so people keep coming back but honestly if your prices are low people remember that and keep coming back, hence why Walmart does so well. Cartwheel has *some* good deals sometimes but it's mainly 25 cents off a $5 purchase (5%), and the red card doesn't save you much either unless you are spending $200+, it's really just to save Target money.
I got a call again today on my day off to come in. I won't be surprised if I'm asked to stay late at least once this week. I would have given notice last week and I so badly want to but I have to wait at least another 3 months.

you know i remember them pushing the card on me a few years back, but the past few years i've gone to a few different walmarts and don't get asked by anyone so i thought they dropped that.

pretty sure lord and taylor /the bay and their banners also push it as well. At least I recall being told to push when I worked for them as cashier.

well look, i know target isn't the only annoying company to work for, every job has it's downers. i should have known better than to apply at a company like that, with the card sales and telling everyone about all the coupons etc, yes, the main point for me is i am getting asked to stay late and come in on my days off like crazy, i don't find that acceptable for a entry level position in this type of job, and i was not told about this upon hiring.
plus after reading the Target response to walmart, and now tjmaxx marshall etc all giving pay raises (they aren't doing it) so all i have to look forward to is 15 cents a year, i couldn't afford to stay with Target even if I wanted to.

I think part of it stems from Walmart being able to kick target's butt here in canada paying it's employees $10 to $11 an hour. And even more in alberta canada. So now they know they can kick target's butt at $10 an hour.
lol, I told my co-workers who complained about our 40 cent pay raise yearly and I'm like on the bright side we aren't getting 10 cent raises or less and don't have to work years just to get the exact pay raise we're getting.

Besides which costco also proved that they can kick both target and walmart's butts even while paying employees $10+ an hour. Plus steal their employees whenever they open nearby.

Tell me about it, if you are going to invest your time, blood, sweat, and tears, at least give a decent pay and don't mock me with a ten cent raise. What kills me is that Target didn't even sugar coat it, they just flat out said they have no plans for next year.

Their so called "raises" don't do shit for anyone.10 cents some years is generous in the company's eyes; it's a miracle if you get 25 cents. You could work there for 4 years and only have a 40 cent increase from where you started. Target is such a joke with their pay. I guess their philosophy "expect more, pay less" REALLY translates to "we expect more from our employees, yet we pay less than our competitors do"!

walmart is probably doing what they are doing because it makes them look good and at the same time they managed to make target the darling of the media look bad. Not bad. hitting two birds with one stone.
