Only my second day and i’m already stressed!
So, I started working at Target in the softlines section yesterday. I am working seasonal. This is my first job EVER. I’ve never had previous cash register experience or retail experience at all. Yesterday, I was only trained on the register for about an hour and a half-2 hours. I think I got the hang of using the register, but i’m definitely not perfect yet! I’m pretty slow. Today was my second day and I was being trained in the softlines section. First of all, I feel like everything has been so unorganized. My originally-designated trainer didn’t even know she was supposed to be training me! So a team leader just chose a random worker from softlines to train me. Then a manager found me while my trainer was away at one point, and asked me to backup on the cash registers but I couldn’t do it because I wasn’t even “in the system” yet.
Basically, from shadowing my trainer I have realized that maybe this is too much for a first job. On Thanksgiving, I’m a cashier my whole shift…and how in the world am I supposed to be FAST on the register when I’ve literally only had an hour and a half of experience!? I seriously wouldn’t mind folding clothes all day if I KNEW that’s what I was going to do. But no, there are many things that I have to do (at random times). It’s also frustrating when guests ask me questions, and I can’t give them the best answer as to where something is, etc. because i’m new! I’m just over-whelmed is all. I feel like I am being thrown to the wolves. Hell, I wasn’t even told I needed a walkie-talkie until my trainer found out I didn’t have one. Haha. (Which, I ended up not being able to use one because there wasn’t one available.) I’m also not totally sure how to use the hand-held device used to scan products to see their DCI # or whatever…anyway, i’m so sorry for my rambling! Any advice for a newbie would be greatly appreciated! Haha. Thanks for your time!

My first retail job was not at Target but at another big box store. After the initial orientation where they told me how wonderful everything would be, I got to the front end and was told that they didn't have time to train me and I had to to just just jump on a register and start ringing.. I had never used a register or a computer before (yes it was a very long time ago)
I cried every night for 2 weeks before I went to work and on my way home.. Once I figured out what I was doing, it was a piece of cake.
I'm sure you will be fine once you get the hang of it...
OMG!!! I know E X A C T L Y how you're feeling! I'm working seasonal as well! Also My first job ever. I got chosen for softlines and also as a backup cashier.
I came in for my first day of training (for softlines) 3 days ago. My "trainer" wasn't even prepared and just sloughed me off to someone else who didn't even know what they were supposed to be doing! Now tomorrow (black Friday) I'm supposed to work 11am-7pm and I feel like I haven't even been properly trained! I'm scared!
Last week I also trained as a cashier. They just threw me on the register cold-turkey while my trainer was away at lunch. Thank God I didn't need any help but still!
This has all been very traumatizing and I don't look forward to going in to work tomorrow. The training procedures seems to leave much to be desired. X(
I feel your pain.. And I wish you the BEST OF LUCK!
