This has bothered me for years…
I have been at Target for 2 1/2 years back in electronics. Something I don’t understand is – why can’t we use our employee discounts with debit/credit cards that aren’t redcards? I find it completely ridiculous! Not everyone wants a fucking REDCARD!! It drive sales blah blah blah makes Target look good blah blah blah. You know what would make Target look good? Fire.

If I remember correctly the reason why is that non-red card transactions are subject to a fee per swipe, meaning that using your normal debit/credit card costs the company more in the long run. I'm not sure what the per-swipe fee for red cards is - if there even is one - but it's obviously less if that's the only one the discount works with. The discount also works with food stamps now, which I find slightly humorous/aggravating.
Target owns its own commercial bank, which means the cost to Target is basically zero. They raised holy hell a few years ago when Wal-Mart wanted to open a commercial bank for the same reasons Target has one, i.e. to cut the cost of processing credit and debit purchases.
As for the ability to use your discount with EBT, they keep trying to remove it with varying degrees of success.
here's why. merchant interchange fees. If you pay with the red card then target doesn't have to pay the interchange fee, so they can give you the discount. If you pay with cash, then target can give you the discount since no one else is taking a bite out of what target makes. Though techically target does not own their credit portfoilo anymore. TD Canada Trust/Td Bank owns it now. 😉
Super easy to get around: ring up the sale with your discount added, suspend sale. Note the new total with discount. save slip.
Purchase gift card for the exact amount of previous sale - pay with whatever card of your own you choose.
Scan suspend slip, total, and pay with your new gift card.
And that's how you get your discount.
It used to be frowned upon but it doesn't say anywhere in the company literature or rules that you can't.
hmm, never realized that could work.
