Okay sir, I just need to swipe your Driver’s License
One thing I do not understand is why in the FUCK do people get so ticked about having their ID’s swiped?? Do you really think a multi-billion dollar company wants your stupid fucking information? You think the LOD is sitting in the back selling your info to pirates? Let me give you an example of one guest’s stupidity:
“I was in Target a few weeks ago. I had about $200 worth of stuff loaded on the conveyer belt and about 1/3 of the way through checking me out the gal says; can I see your drivers license? I asked why – she said because it’s required if I want to buy NyQuil.
I took my license out and showed it to her. She tried to grab it, I asked her what she was doing, she said she needed to swipe my license. Um, no. There is all sorts of information contained on that strip that Target has no business accessing. She said she couldn’t continue unless I let her swipe my DL. I said you’d rather I walk out rather than let me buy NyQuil without giving Target the same information I need to give the DMV in order to be licensed to operate a motor vehicle. She said yes.
I left all the stuff sitting on the belt and walked out.”
-Taken from a Huffington Post website.
CLAP CLAP DUDE YOU’RE A LITTLE BADASS WOOOW CLAAAAAP CLAAP MAAAAAAN YOU STOOD UP FOR CIVIL RIGHTS. No. No, you’re a fucking dumb ass who probably thinks the GUBMENT is watching your every move. Think of all that fucking time you wasted for something as stupid as keeping your name and address from a fucking machine.
Listen people, the only information, THE ONLY FUCKING INFORMATION, on a driver’s license magnetic strip is the SAME INFORMATION AS YOU CAN SEE ON THE FRONT OF YOUR CARD. Your DOB, name, address, DL ID, that’s about it. It doesn’t get your social, it doesn’t get your phone #, it doesn’t get your soul. So chill the fuck out.
By the way people, if you DO get your card swiped and you start, say, getting shit in your mail from Target or anything like that, you do have legal protection:
Civil Code: CONFIDENTIALITY OF DRIVER’S LICENSE INFORMATION
- 1798.90.1. (a) (1) Any business may swipe a driver’s license or identification card issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles in any electronic device for the following purposes:
(A) To verify age or the authenticity of the driver’s license or identification card.
(B) To comply with a legal requirement to record, retain, or transmit that information.
(C) To transmit information to a check service company for the purpose of approving negotiable instruments, electronic funds transfers, or similar methods of payments, provided that only the name and identification number from the license or the card may be used or retained by the check service company.
(D) To collect or disclose personal information that is required for reporting, investigating, or preventing fraud, abuse, or material misrepresentation.
(2) A business may not retain or use any of the information obtained by that electronic means for any purpose other than as provided herein.
(b) As used in this section, “business” means a proprietorship, partnership, corporation, or any other form of commercial enterprise.
(c) A violation of this section constitutes a misdemeanor punishable by imprisonment in a county jail for no more than one year, or by a fine of no more than ten thousand dollars ($10,000), or by both.
If any of these are breached by Target or anyone else, GET A LAWYER AND TAKE LEGAL ACTION.
So next time a cashier asks to swipe your ID, just hand the God damn card over. Googling this shit gave me a fucking headache just trying to even remotely comprehend how r******d these “DON’T SWIPE MY CARD” people are. You read their ignorance and it’s hard not to envision them with tin foil wrapped around their head.

Yeah, guests can be asses..Most of the ones I get are flattered that I card them. I make a big joke about it.
I have noticed lately that I only have to type the date of birth in even though it requests to see the license. It no longer asks for supervisor key when you type in the date.
I haven't told anyone at my store that this works, not sure if it's some kind of glitch in the system or not - but who cares. It's less work for me.
Sometimes if I don't feel like asking the people what their birthday is, I will just make up one. Especially if the person seems grumpy.
Lol I never made it up. Here in Texas we didn't have to swipe it- just type in the DOB. I just think it's stupid people get so pissed off over something as stupid as their name, DL ID, and home address being punched into a computer.
"Do you really think a multi-billion dollar company wants your stupid fucking information?"
No, but after the breach I wouldn't trust Target in the slightest with my information.
However, you are correct that people are overreacting. NyQuil contains dextromethorphan, which is regulated (but not controlled), and your driver's license is only required to prove you are of age to purchase it.
Besides, if the gubment wanted your information, they could get it easily through other means. Also, do they not think the DMV is a government agency?
Come on now, TG, no one's gonna steal your identity with just your name, address, DOB, and DL ID :). You need a lot more than that. Now if it gave out your SSN that would be another story.
As for my comment about the "gubment" that was a joke implying that the man I was quoting is a conspiracy theorist.
Haha, I know that =P
I was more so trying to rationalize guests being hesitant to provide their DLs. The thing about the gubment was me poking fun at people who don't realize the DMV is part of the government anyways. Folks are way too paranoid these days, after all.
Keep your dirty government hands off my medicare!
If the guest looks like he/she is over 35 years or older then the cashier does not need to ask for an id. The cashier can simply ask the guest for date of birth verbally. That was stated in the News To Use Letter.
*facepalms*
I can totally understand swiping it for a big order or return, buddy in Guest Service had to explain that may times. That being said though I kinda understand the more freaking out more than usual These scumbags at Tarshit not only got their shit Hacked but there were warned about it and their lazy asses did nothing. So people are may paranoid than usual and I cant say I blame them too much more. I haven't worked there in a year and I wont go there unless i Have cash, fuck that
I know, guests are all stupid, most people get it now that come to my store. But some are like, "why, you can see that I'm old, why I gotta do that, that's wrong!" No it's not wrong, it's called if there's anything that contains alcohol or methanol of any kind, than by United States law a drivers license or I.D. of any kind must be entered for verification of legal age. Dumb idiots, they don't even know USA law, that's how stupid Americans are these days.
EXACTLY. That's what makes me so fucking mad. I KNOW YOU'RE 80-YEARS-OLD but we still have to see identification. Idk about other Targets, but at the one I worked at the screen turned gray with only the "Enter Guests's Date of Birth" and the white space where you type in the DOB. You can't exit out of this screen or do anything until you punch in a DOB. I used to have to explain that to guests and they'd still freak out and shit. Especially after the data breach.
if they are freaking that badly don't shop in target for your alcoholic items. Actually don't shop for liquor. Brew your own wine or drive up to canada and buy them in a govt owned liquor store and pay twice the amount you normally pay down in the states. It might be different for the Canadian targets though. Liquor is sold by govt owned stores or private licensed stand alone liquor stores. Church and MAD don't want people drinking, but some folks want their alcoholic beverages so govt sells the liquor in govt owned stores. Keeps both sides happy lol.
Lol MADD is a joke. Bunch of people who lost loved ones to some alcohol-related incident and all of a sudden they blame alcohol for all the problems in the world. Even the original founder of MADD left it for that reason.
