No Future In Target
While attending college, I took up a part time job at target. The HR manager grit her teeth when she told me what I would be making if I accepted the job. It was well below minimum wage. By her reluctance to tell me this, I could see most people were turning the job down and probably walking out of the interview. I’m a young college student at this point. I just need something while I’m in college.
My friend worked at the store as a career. He was there five years. This is a guy that never called in sick. Never took a day off. Yet, when promotion came up he was always over looked for a new jack. I knew instantly that there was no way in hell I would ever amount to anything working at this place if my friend’s perfect record and stellar work ethic was considered jack shit to Target.
When my ninety days were up – Yes. Unlike most employees, I did get that raise. Five cents. I went from making $5.15 an hour to $5.20 an hour. Oh gee wiz, oh boy! The cars I could now buy with that! I can finally move out of my room at home, and get my own apartment! Not! My pay checks were enough to pay for my cell phone bill and a half tank of gas. Mind you, my cell phone is 1970s style ghetto and I’m on the broke bitch as fuck plan.
I eventually lost the motivation. Especially when I’m working 12 hour shifts, and some how….my paychecks were always $200.00 on a good day, if not less than that.

Target and most big box corporations will always start you off below minimum wage, because they can technically get away with it if you're "in training," despite the fact that, at Target, training is just five minutes of someone showing you how to do something then throwing you on the floor/lane.
It is never worth trying to get a raise, because even good raises are terrible at Target. Most of the time you'll get screwed out of one anyway for little things your TL's will write you up for (and never tell you about). Or they just hired a bunch of new trainees and they ran out of money.
That's not true. Minimum wage is called minimum wage, because that's legally the minimum wage they're allowed to pay. That's why they have the anti-union videos, they don't want anybody to get smart enough to stand up for themselves.
I was suspicious about that too, because I know for certain I was hired at .25 below minimum wage. However, they bumped it to minimum once I was done training. I asked my friends that worked at Target and other similar retail stores, and some said they were indeed hired below minimum when they were considered trainees.
Big box employers are not allowed to screw you on the minimum wage pay. That is a big no no that can lead to federal fines and such.
If they're only paying you 5.15 I would turn them into your local labor board because 5.15 was minimum wage in 2003. So they have been technically stealing from you.
That's why target hates unions lol. xD, wonder if they try doing that up here. Wal mart would have a field day if they did that too.
