Need to know
Someone who knows, please inform me: HOW do ETLs get these cushy jobs? Not one at our store is approachable or friendly, most of them talk to guests like they just learned English that morning, and they all spend most of their shifts checking their phones and hanging out at Starbucks or in HR – in my store, anyway. So please, how do they get these jobs?
Honestly, there are so many things about this place that I don’t get.
I fail to understand why we need to be friendly when the ETLs walk around with permanent scowls on their bitchy faces. I fail to understand why they have written up several staff members for checking their phones while they do the same thing when they think no one is looking. (Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think TMs should have their phones on the floor…but neither should the ETLs!) I fail to understand why some jobs don’t get posted; instead, friends of TLs simply get promoted. I fail to understand why we are lied to when people “leave”.
Anyone have any answers for me?

The excuse that I got was that bringing people in as ETLs fresh out of college brings a "different perspective" to the store from those who have been with the company for a while (because we're usually too bitter).
What I'm assuming is the -real- reason is that these morons who have never had a job before Target are considered "highly moldable" and are the perfect corporate lapdog candidates. Think about it, most of them have never worked at the bottom of the ladder as a TM. When you put pampered asshats in charge you get snobby, self-righteous, hypocritical neanderthals in leadership positions they never should've qualified for in the first place.
And as I've said before, it always amazes me how easily these people get confused when things start going wrong. They throw around the term "lead by example" then stand around with their heads up each other's asses all day, so why should anyone else try hard? Especially when we get slapped in the face with pathetic $0.10-0.15 raises despite doing -all of the actual work-.
All too often all these ETL's right out of school have never had a retail job until they got the Target ETL position.
They have no idea what it's like to work with mature adults (anyone over 26 years) and they are all in their early 20's.
They don't know what it's like to deal with people whose whole life is not Target.
They get these ETL jobs right out of school, drink up all the Target Kool aid about how they can Rah rah for Target and get everyone to do more and more work and get more and more out of them. And they think it's their job and people get called in because they are not happy happy happy with short staff increased work load and how they need to have a better attitude when the newly graduated ETLs are on their first job thinking they can ride people to do more and more and more.
Nothing is more true or exactly "on the ball" then the stories that hit the website here today.
The ONLY thing that will make things change at all at tarshit, is for people to stop spending money there. Until this happens,, the bullshit will continue and gregg and his cronies in Minneapolis will just keep raking in the green stuff and laughing. everyone must stop spending money at tarshit, it is the only language these morons understand.
The Walmarts are becoming so big that is what will drive people to Target.
All the Chicagoland Walmarts are expanding out of control.
What Walmart does not know is people don't have all day to spend in a store, or walk over a block between cleaning supplies and health and beauty.
That's where Target is going to come out ahead here, people who want to buy a few things and get out. That is not what is happening at Walmart, which is all to Target's advantage. So Target is not going away soon.
This is awesome and true!! I used to ask ETL's to their face why they were useless and could do no work. I wondered why they would all dress so well if they needed to do work throughout the store. They dressed well because they did no work. Anyway, the response I received from numerous ETLs about my query was this....We are only here to manage talent. We are here to make a schedule, position people throughout the store, and give the team direction for success, and to hire good quality employees. It is up to the TLs and TMs to get the grunt work done. At my store we had 12 ETLs who had to be making at least 50k/yr. That's 600k/yr for one store. Imagine multiplying that by the 2000 stores Target has. That is a whole lot of money to be wasting every year on a USELESS position like ETL!!! I, once, sat in my manager's office and explained how useless his ETLs were and he should fire all of them. The TLs were doing all of the work. He said he agreed and that if any of the before mentioned 600k/yr was going his way, he would!!!! Hahaha!! ETL is a worthless, and useless, position!
"We are only here to manage talent." Really? I didn't know that standing around while your brain atrophies was considered a "talent," let alone something one should strive for.
But of course, instead of severing the festering managerial limbs that are the ETLs, they'd rather penny and dime their money out of the TMs paychecks with MyTime's "guest-focused scheduling."
Target's new motto should be: We Don't Even Know What We're Doing, But Boy-Howdy We're Going to Pretend We Do.
It surprises me that they do not promote from a store tater than get kids fresh out of college cause first of all there degree 90% Of the time is not retail or anything related wtf will u hire them example one of the old etl was a major in beauty and fashion but yet in foods? Like serious most stuff at target dosnt take a whole lot of brains and common sense to say wow
