Finally fucking fed up
Lets start from the beginning, shall we?
Background
So I started working at Target 1516 of July of 2018 in Softlines. At first it was great; I made a decent amount of friends, the management was laid back and I was getting above minimum wage. I left for LOA in September for school and returned for Black Friday. Even though I’m softlines, they put me on register all day because they “double scheduled” me. It was my third time working register and the experience was awful. That should’ve been the first warning sign.
Things start to go wrong
I return for summer of 2019, excited for my long hours and $13 pay. The first month was great, I made a good friend and got to work with her all day. Management liked me and said “they liked my merchandising” and I even got scheduled as VM a couple times (our VM left and were still in the process of hiring, its a position I want).
I think around July things started to go downhill. My friend and I were going through RTW, chatting and finishing Z-racks in double the time it would take if we did them ourselves. Our LOD comes up to us and says that we can’t be chatting because we’re “being unproductive” and “wasting time”. Keep in mind this is the same LOD who sits at the fitting room for 2 hours organizing hangers. Needless to say we kept getting in trouble for working on Z-racks together, and my friend eventually quit. From that moment things started to get REALLY crazy.
Noticing the hypocrisy
I met one of my best friends in July and she works in Men’s. She cannot leave her department, even if other sections are a disaster. She could be folding men’s shirts for the 5th time and reshop could be overflowing and she can’t help out. This issue gets crazier as time goes on.
Since we’re very good friends, we talk a lot while working. We get our shit done, we just talk while we do it. Our LOD came up to us numerous times to say we’re not allowed to group because it looks bad.
Here’s the hypocritical part: our LOD ALWAYS talks to other coworkers while she’s working. Maybe I’ll make a post about how awful our Softlines LOD is another time, but she CONSTANTLY talks to another softlines member while she folds the tables or does whatever the fuck she does. But if my friend and I so much as make eye contact we get in trouble (this is not a joke, it happened).
I can’t take it anymore
The past 2 weeks have been hell on earth for us Softlines crew. My friend was crying and I wasn’t comforting her, LOD came over about grouping and I had to explain that she was crying. My friend then had to talk to the LOD about everything happening.
The hypocrisy keeps getting deeper. All the LODs INCLUDING HR went out to prank another LOD by saran wrapping his car. They were all on the clock. Yet we cannot work on Z-racks together.
Just today, my friend was leaving and a softlines member was coming in. We stop in RTW to talk about where we’ll be working today (BGI wasn’t touched all day). Our LOD appears out of nowhere and says we cannot group anymore and we will be fired if we keep grouping. We were talking about work. MEANWHILE 3 hours earlier, HR and two LODs were folding tables in softlines, chatting about how some dude took acid and got hit by a car and died and other nonsensical unrelated work content, but I can’t be in the same section as another member to fold a messy table without getting yelled at. When my friend brought up this hypocrisy to HR, they said “LODs are different because it doesn’t look as bad”. Like the guests will fucking notice a difference, you’re an employee just like us.
Needless to say, I ain’t coming back for the summer. I don’t want to work at a place that discourages friendly engagement with coworkers when LODs do exactly what we’re not allowed to do. This place is hell and fucking hypocritical and a popularity game and I’m so tired.

Wow this place sounds terrible and immature. I hope you can find happiness.
Hi, as much as I would not like to invalidate the things you said in this post, during the time I have worked at the same target which has been over a year, I have had almost zero troubles with the LODS. I talk daily with my coworkers and have probably only been seriously told off once or twice in the year I've worked there for things that were in hindsight my fault. I would even go as far as to say the LODs at this store are pretty lenient, a lot of the time they have specifically put me in areas where I would be working with my friends. Honestly the only people I see complain seriously about the LODS are people who never did their jobs and would end up having other people pick up their slack.
