There are two things I wish to vent about today. First things first, the shocker. I was up in the breakroom when I heard that nearly every LOD was leaving to celebrate a wedding. I have almost no idea who got married, although I have some, but nothing definite. I sat there thinking to myself “These LOD’s get to leave for who knows how long to celebrate a wedding?” As far as I’m concerned that’s abandoning your post. They even called in a guy from another store to fill in. This other guy liked telling me how to do my job. He can be my guest if he wants to take a stab at cleaning up unpotty trained children. The LOD’s came back when I was about done with my shift and started kind of working, as if nothing ever happend.

Recently I had experiences that really made me wonder about Target. I was shopping and encountered a former Target employee. We got to talking and she told me a story where she was going to try and work two jobs. The training schedule at her new job conflicted with her schedule at Target. Target in their less than infinite wisdom, let her go, saying “she didn’t work hard enough.” Excuse me. The woman worked in softlines, other than hanging up clothes there’s not much else to do, how are you supposed to work hard at that? The woman strongly suspects Target got rid of her because they wanted to fill her position with younger people. I don’t think Target is an angel or anything, but I did think they were above that. Does Target really think that the people they’re slapping around aren’t going to talk about it to family and friends, that the unfairness that they direct at their employees isn’t going to be heard?

Most days I can honestly say that I get up in the morning and say to myself, “Today can’t be that bad at work.” Almost everytime I’m proven wrong. I just got in and clocked in and was ready to see what the day had in store for me. Right when I got onto the sales floor, a women ambushed me and demanded to know where the 1 inch binders were. Two things flew through my mind in a second. First, “how the hell should I know?” Second, How convienient, a woman demands something in the first five minutes. not only that, but she probably hasen’t looked for it on her own. I excused myself, and even apologized for not knowing. I should have seen the omen then but things were just going to get worse.

Today I was lucky to escape without getting a severe case of heatstroke. Being a Cart Attendant in the heat can be a near death sentence. Just before lunch I was approached by a customer who asked a very confusing question, “What are your Red Card deals for today?” I honesty don’t know the indoor specials, how could I? I work primarily outside, nevermind that I never get a flyer. So I asked him to clarify his question being confused. The “guest” just rose his voice to me and asked the same thing, except this time he said it one snippit at a time, like I was mentally slow or something. Finally I offered to go get an ad from Guest Service, and look for the answer to his request, although my patience with him was thinning. I had no idea what he wanted from me. The jerk got so mad at me he did it himself and stormed away. I felt guilty for a few minutes, until I realized all he wanted was for me to do his homework for him. Whenever I shop I know exactly what I want, unless I run into an instore special. This is hardly the first time this has happend. Where I work, there is a worsening epidemic of middle aged men embracing laziness and flying off the deep end for little if any reason. Do you guys think I did anything wrong?

I’ve resisted writing about the Vibe until now. Recently I’ve gotten at least two hand outs on the Vibe which in itself wouldn’t bother me. Thanks for the scrap paper. What does bother me is that I’ve been coached on it twice. I’ve worked at Target for years, and now they’re saying that not only am I not efficient enough due to them increasing their standards but they don’t like the fact that I’m not a used car salesman. I can understand that they want to change their policy but let’s have a little reality check.

I was going on break or maybe lunch, satisfied that I wouldn’t have to deal with a wall of “guests” for at least a good fifteen minutes or a half hour. A guest approached me right when I turned off my walkie and asks “Does Target have a Jewelry area?” My first reaction was to think to myself, “Of course we do you idiot.” I refrained from lashing out, realizing that this elderly customer had not come to Target in a long while and was most likely unaware that we no longer have anyone stationed at the Jewelry station. I informed her that if she needed help she’d have to ask for it. She than asked if they’d replace her watch battery, I informed her that unless she bought the watch at Target she’s out of luck. This is a terrible policy, why penalize people even employees for not buying the watch at Target? You’d still be getting their business, even if it’s just changing the battery. The women amazed at the service she wouldn’t be getting went on her way. I hope she bought less than she initially planned.

Awhile back I was called off to the side to discuss the responsibilities of the Cart Attendant job. I know the responsibilites just fine because I’ve been doing the job for years. The GSA decided to give me a talking to because the spill stations weren’t being checked enough. I responded with something along the lines of, “all you have to do is ask.” For that I got this response, “duties that the Cart Attendants are responsibile aren’t getting done.” As if I’m responsible for five other guys when I’m not even at work.

Working as a Cart Attendant can be tolerable. Unless some high in the sky LOD is on your case. One of the worst things about working the Cart Attendant job is that supervisors and “guests” expect you to dry off the carts whenever it rains. Okay I dry them off, but get this, that isn’t even satasfactory anymore. Whenever it rains I’m hassled about putting dry carts near the isle where Starbucks is. This requires me to rearrange the entire lot of carts. Taking already dry carts near the cart pusher and repositioning them on the other side of the cart area, this of course eats up time I could be using for other things. This is just a bunch of make work. I don’t see what’s wrong with just drying the carts and putting them in any lane I choose. Besides, no matter how well I dry the carts I always get this trademark remark from the “guests” “This cart is wet.” I chuckle everytime they whine this line out like a cat that just had it’s foot stepped on. I mean they just walked through rain to get in the store and they’re suprised that there’s still water on the carts. One time I had to say this after I heard the whinging about a cart being wet, “That’s what happens when it rains,” I got the nastiest look. But seriously, I shouldn’t have to explain why rain makes things wet.

Target should change it’s name to Go Fetch’ It and here’s why. Working as a Cart Attendant I have to obviously do Carts but also: hangers, reshop, baskets, bringing back motorized carts, spills, wiping off carts when it rains and some other stuff that I’m forgeting. This isn’t about me whining about the Cart Attendant job it’s about what happens in the last half and hour of some shifts. Occasionaly I get asked or demanded to, get milk for Starbucks. Now in my opinion I think Food Avenue was just fine. I loved their chicken strips and popcorn. Nowdays I never shop at Starbucks. I don’t even like coffee. In my opinion it shouldn’t be in the store, it’s just a stupid fad. Anyway, Starbucks is uasually manned by two girls, until the last hour of my shift. Than they like to ask me to go get milk from them. Are you serious? Where did they get the idea that I have fifteen minutes to waste in the cooler filling up a cart with milk and whipping cream, that we almost never have. I’ve got other stuff to do. I would so love it if one of the ETL’s or LOD’s had to do that and freeze their little butts off while they’re at it.

A few months ago I went on paid vacation. I didn’t go anywhere fancy or anything, I just needed a break from the work atmosphere. When I came back on coincidently payday, I had a suprise almost as big as life. Target wasn’t going to pay me for the vacation hours I’d just used. Target thought it was okay to only pay me for the week that I worked. So in essence Target thinks I should pay the bills with only one weeks pay with a part time job. I talked with HR about it, even though I was furious. HR looked me straight in the eyes as if this were normal procedure and said, that because I didn’t submit my request for paid vacation on the E-HR it didn’t go through. I don’t like E-HR it always wants me to reset my password, which is why I asked to apply for paid vacation through a paper application. I don’t understand why Target is trying to force everyone to use electronics, when they don’t work properly msot the time. I had a gut feeling that was going to happen but I ignored it and threw away the recipt. I was eventually given a voucher and what I was owed in cash but this was the first in many incident to tell me things are going to start going very wrong.
